An APS of 20–25
still opens real doors.

Medicine and Engineering may be out of reach for now — but Higher Certificates, Diplomas, extended degree programmes and several full Bachelor's routes are not. Here's exactly where a 20–25 APS score gets you in.

26 public universities in SA 15+ institutions covered below 3 qualification tiers explained

Where APS 20–25 sits on the ladder

APS isn't pass/fail — it's a sorting mechanism across three tiers of qualification. Knowing which tier your score lands in changes which door you knock on.

Tier 1
15–19

Higher Certificate (NQF 5)

Your safety net. A one-year bridge that lets your certificate marks — not your matric marks — carry you into a diploma or degree next year.

Tier 2 — you are here
20–25

Diploma & extended degree zone

The widest band. Most Universities of Technology and comprehensive universities open diplomas here, and several Bachelor's degrees become reachable through extended/foundation routes.

Tier 3
26+

Standard Bachelor's degree

Direct entry into most mainstream degrees. High-demand fields like Medicine, Engineering and Law usually sit well above this, often 32–42.

Universities to target with a 20–25 APS

Grouped by how the institution typically uses this score range. Ranges are indicative and vary by faculty, programme and year — always confirm on the university's own admissions page before applying.

Three ways to turn 20–25 into a degree

A low-ish APS is a sequencing problem, not a dead end. These are the routes that actually work.

01

Climb through a Higher Certificate or Diploma

Register for the qualification your APS actually qualifies for. Once you pass it, universities look at those marks — not your old matric results — when you apply to upgrade into a related degree.

02

Apply for an Extended or Foundation Programme

Offered at Wits, UCT, UP, UKZN, NWU, NMU and others. Same degree, spread over an extra year, with smaller classes and academic support built in for students just below the standard cut-off.

03

Use a TVET college as a stepping stone

Especially strong for trades and technical fields. A TVET diploma can be used to apply into a related university programme later, often alongside practical work experience.

Before you apply anywhere

Recalculate your APS excluding Life Orientation, check whether your target programme needs specific subject minimums (e.g. 60% in Maths for Engineering-adjacent diplomas), and apply to more than one tier — a Higher Certificate as backup to a Diploma application costs you nothing and keeps your options open.
